The average American thinker is not smart, nor are they stupid, they are really just average. Therefore, what makes the average American support a Presidential Candidate that has so little experience and is so far left that he makes Al Franken look like a three term senator? It’s strange that intellectuals or at least politicians with their heads screwed on correctly are rarely elected as presidential candidates.
Now, I’m not going to say that John McCain is the brightest of the bunch, he did finish 5th to last in his class at Annapolis and I won’t even try to argue that. Nevertheless, McCain at least has his head screwed on and will be able to handle the job as president. Obama on the other hand may have been very, very, “book smart” (he was the editor of the Law Review at Harvard) but the head being screwed on part…not so sure about that.
However, this is where it gets confusing. The American people are the ones stuck in a pickle. On one side we have McCain. A man who could definitely lead a country based on his kick ass policy (which for those of you that don’t know is his “if we’re not kicking ass let’s start kicking ass policy”), and probably wouldn’t have a shot leading us on his “book smartness” (is that a word). Yet on the other side there is Obama, who could lead America if he was reading a book along the way and actually followed the book (something he hasn’t done in the past and probably won’t do in the future) but would have more trouble than a snowman in hell if he tried to lead us based on common sense.
Whatever happened to classic great American presidents? Men, who led our country through times of difficulty and actually brought real “change” to the United States. Think about it, after Eisenhower, who ended his presidency in 1961, can anyone think of a great American President? Some will argue Reagan, who makes a good case, yet still most do not consider him a great president. Somewhere between arming the Taliban, encouraging Saddam Hussein to go to war with Iran while funding the Iranian Contra’s in Nicaragua, I think he loses his claim. Whatever happened the Washingtons, Jeffersons, Lincolns, Trumans, Teddy and Freddy Roosevelts and of course Eisenhowers?
Does our political system lack greatness and if it does, will we ever get it back? I’m afraid to say it, but in this day and age “greatness” is not important to the average American voter. The prospects of someone becoming a great leader are so slim now adays because the voter frankly does not care. Voters are more concerned with the looks of a candidate then whether or not that person will make a great leader. Just take a look in “People Magazine” one week and you’ll see a poll asking readers of the magazine who will make a sexier president, or in 2004 a tabloid asked readers to rank in order from 1-4 which presidential or vice presidential candidate they would rather sleep with (Edwards came first…Cheney last). Unfortunately, America is concerned with looks and “hype speech” rather than policy and leadership. We have turned into a lazy, American Idol nation, instead of becoming a great nation that rallies in support of our country and values.
