In a hypothetical 2009 governor matchup, Chris Christie is the winner. According to a new Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday, 41% of likely voters said they would vote for Christie, while 40% said Corzine. Although the poll is not substantial enough to secure Christie as the next governor of New Jersey, this poll is terrible news for Corzine.
With more than a year to go until the governor election, and with many New Jerseyians not even knowing who Chris Christie is, this poll is good news for the New Jersey Republican Party. In addition, just to rub it in the dismal governor’s face, only 9% of those polled, which were Democrats, Republicans and Independents, said things have gotten better under John Corzine.
Hopefully, Corzine doesn’t recognize the signs of his failure and actually runs for re-election. The last thing the Republicans need is for Corzine to announce he won’t seek re-election and have Dick Codey run for governor. If that happens the GOP doesn’t stand a chance, but right now, things are looking pretty good.
