John McCain ‘s national co-chair Phil Gramm stepped in it. He said America was in a “mental recession” and that we are a “nation of whiners.”
I disagree strongly about the mental recession. We are going to go through an ugly economic period no matter who wins this election. For evidence just look at the recent job numbers. The Fed will raise rates no matter what, it will be harder to get money and the economy will contract. How long this difficult period will last could very well swing on who wins this November.
Where Gramm is spot on is America being a nation of whiners. The sad and ugly truth is that we are. Every time something goes wrong we cry that government hasn’t done enough. People who bought a house they couldn’t afford or ran up a credit card bill they couldn’t pay demanded the government bail them out of their poor decisions. The government responded by borrowing money we didn’t have to send $600 checks out so people pay their bills and funding a $300 billion mortage bailout to Americans who ended up in debt due to their own greed or irresponsible behavior. So much for rugged individualism, self-reliance and pulling yourself up by your boot straps! All too often these days people look to the federal government to save them from whatever predicament they find themselves in. Refusing to take any responsibility for their own actions and simultaneously blaming government while demanding it rectifies their situation is the truest definition of a nation of whiners.
