New Jersey Democrats are a clever bunch. If you have read The Art of War you should know to never underestimate your opponent. State Democrats are coming up with a plan to force through Governor Corzine’s wildy unpopular plan to raise tolls, install new tolls and allow the turnpike to be turned over to private interests.
Democrats are using raising the gas tax as a trojan horse to carry Corzine’s toll hike scheme past angry voters. Democrats contend they need a way to pay for infrastructure repairs. Since the gas tax is wildly unpopular in the face of $3.60 per gallon gasoline, Democrats claim that since that is not likely, other measures will need to be enacted. These measures include raising tolls, installing new tolls on roads that did not previously have them and allowing private entities to operate lanes on the turnpike.
Does any of that sound familiar?
